A suction pump is a vital device commonly used in neonatal units. It is designed to clear the nostrils and airways of newborn babies, particularly those receiving respiratory support such as oxygen therapy or CPAP.
The Aspiret suction pump operates in a similar way to other suction devices.
Inside the Aspiret suction pump is an electric pump that draws air through a port on the top of the unit.
As air is removed from the collection reservoir, a vacuum is created inside the reservoir and throughout the connected tubing. This vacuum provides the suction needed to remove fluids from the patient’s airway.
Fluids from the patient are drawn into the collection reservoir. Inside the lid, a silicone gasket creates an airtight seal, allowing a vacuum to be created for suction. The lid also contains a connection port for the patient tubing and a safety float valve, which helps prevent liquids from overflowing into the tubing and internal pump.
A bacterial filter in the tubing helps prevent germs from reaching the pump.
The device features a pressure gauge that displays the level of suction being generated. A regulator knob allows the suction level to be increased or decreased as required.
Inside the device, there are two separate systems, either of which can develop faults.
The first is the electrical system.
Power enters the device from the mains lead and passes through the power entry module. Two brown cables then take it to the on/off switch. The two black cables then lead from the on/off switch to supply the pump and cooling fan.
The second is the suction system, made up of rubber tubing and the other components that create the vacuum, including the pump. With the upper casing removed, the suction system can be seen more clearly.
The lower nozzle on the pump is the suction or vacuum side. This is connected to a four-way connector, which distributes the vacuum to the patient port, pressure gauge, and suction regulator.
The upper nozzle is the exhaust side of the pump. Air leaving the pump is directed through this tube and expelled from the device through the exhaust muffler. The air from the exhaust muffler flows into the inside of the machine casing before leaving the device through the ventilation openings in the bottom casing.
It is important that these tubes are connected correctly. If they are reversed, the pump will blow air instead of creating suction.
The Aspiret also contains two rubber mounting supports. These help absorb vibrations from the motor during operation and also hold the pump in place.
To gain access to the internal components, start by removing all of the tubing and then detach the collection reservoir. Before proceeding, ensure the device is disconnected from the mains power supply.
The casing is secured with four Phillips screws. Remove these and place them somewhere safe to avoid losing them.
Once the screws have been removed, carefully lift the top cover away from the base to access the internal components.
Finally, use the screwdriver to gently detach the tube connected to the lower nozzle on the suction pump.
Take note not to damage the tubing, as any leaks could reduce the effectiveness of the suction.
