BiliDx bilirubinometer: How it works
This handheld bilirubinometer device is designed to check for jaundice in newborn babies by testing a blood sample. In this film, you can find out how the device work and what its main components are.

The BilliDX is a handheld bilirubinometer device used to check for jaundice in newborn babies. It does this by measuring the amount of a waste substance called bilirubin in a sample of the baby’s blood.
The BilliDX is powered by a rechargeable battery located inside its handle. This is charged via a port at the side of the device. When it is charging, the power indicator at the top should flash on and off with a blue light.
The BilliDX can be used while the charger is plugged in or disconnected when the battery is charged. The device is powered on by pressing the switch at the top to the “On” position. Now, the screen should display the word “Go.”
The measurement button at the bottom and the power indicator at the top should both show a blue light. This means the machine is ready to use.
A blood sample from the baby is placed on the test strip.
The blood will transfer by capillary action to the reading window, where an even layer of the blood can be tested.
The test strip is then clicked shut and inserted into the BilliDX device.
When the strip is pushed fully in, it activates a switch inside the machine that prepares it to run a test.
Next, the measurement button is pressed and released. The button displays a rotating light.
Here, we get an “Error 30” message on the screen and the measurement button is flashing red. This indicates an issue with the test strip. In this case, we have used a strip without a real blood sample, so we would expect this.
When a real blood sample is used, the machine will shine light through the blood in the reading window. This happens inside the device in the optical unit.
The light passes from LED lights through the sample and onto a photosensor on the other side.
As the bilirubin in blood absorbs specific wavelengths of light, the sensor is able to work out how much bilirubin is present in the blood.
A signal is then sent to the display panel, showing the bilirubin level of the blood sample to the user.
