New Aspiret suction pump: Checking the electrical circuit and replacing the power switch

If the device does not power on when the on/off switch is pressed, the fault is likely within the electrical system.

The electrical circuit should be checked from the mains power supply through to the on/off switch to the pump.

The Aspiret is powered through a detachable mains lead connected via an IEC socket.

The first thing to check is the fuse in the plug. There is no fuse inside the device itself.

After checking the plug fuse, leave the device disconnected from the mains and switched off.

Now you can remove the upper casing to access the internal components.

The power lead connects to a power entry module with two terminals inside the device. So we need to check that power is reaching these terminals.

First, expose the terminals by gently prising them off with a screwdriver. You can use a permanent marker to ensure you put them back on the correct way around.

Now plug the device back in and carefully check for mains voltage. You should get a reading corresponding to the voltage in your country.

The power is then carried by the brown wires to the on/off switch, so make sure the wires are not damaged.

The next component to check is the on/off switch. This is a double pole switch, which disconnects both electrical conductors for improved safety.

With the device disconnected from the mains, you can partially slide back the insulation covers to expose the switch terminals, or you can take them off. But remember which way they are connected, otherwise you may cause damage or make the switch work in reverse.

Set the switch to the on position and the multimeter to continuity mode. Test between each input terminal and its corresponding output terminal.

So a brown wire on the input side and a black wire from the output.

The multimeter should indicate continuity in both circuits when the switch is on. If the switch is off, there will be no continuity.

If continuity is not present while the switch is in the on position, the switch is faulty and should be replaced.

Also inspect the switch for signs of overheating, burnt contacts, or carbon deposits, which may affect its operation. To replace the switch, it is good practice to label the wires or keep them grouped together to ensure they are reconnected correctly. Gently disconnect the cables by pulling off the connectors.

Fit the new switch by reconnecting the cables in their original positions and ensuring the insulation covers are fully in place.

Once the switch is in place, you can connect to the mains to test it. If it turns on while the switch is in off position, as is the case here, it means that the wires have been put back the wrong way around.
