If there are internal blockages or signs of damage, a common cause is liquid entering from the reservoir due to a failed float valve. If you suspect this, ensure the machine is turned off and disconnected before opening it.

Once opened, check for any signs of liquid damage.

If liquid is present, all internal tubing and the inside of the pump will need to be cleaned, sterilized, and thoroughly dried.

This is important for two reasons. First, to prevent any infection risk. Second, because mains voltage runs to the electric pump, and if the device is operated with liquid inside, it could cause a short circuit and result in further damage.

The best thing to use for cleaning is alcohol and cotton. Do not use chlorine on any metal parts as it can cause rapid corrosion.

First, remove all the tubing. You can mark one of the tubes to help put them back the right way.

This can be sterilized by soaking it in a chlorine solution, followed by a thorough rinse in line with normal cleaning protocols.

Also, make sure to undo the nuts holding the vacuum regulator and gauge and clean them.

Next, disconnect the two brown electric leads from the power entry module.

You will now need to remove the pump from the device, take it apart, and inspect all internal components before cleaning them.

The motor is secured by two sets of rubber mounts located at the top and bottom of the casing. It sits on the lower mount and is held in place by the upper casing when it is closed with screws.

There are no screws to remove inside the device.

All internal components should be cleaned using cotton and alcohol and then left to dry completely before reassembly. It is essential that everything is cleaned thoroughly. Preterm babies are highly vulnerable to infection, which can be life-threatening. Because suction pumps are used on multiple patients, they carry a high risk of cross-infection if not properly cleaned.

Only once everything is clean and dry should you reassemble the device and switch it on to test it. Do not switch it on while it is still wet.
